The Ajaches Massif was the first part of the island to form some 12 million years ago. The erosion of the waters and the trade winds reveal its basal base.
In the southern part of the Massif, the first city of the modern era of the entire archipelago was established, the old San Marcial del Rubicón, very close to where the famous Papagayo Beach is located today. In this same area there are archaeological remains of this first Hispanic settlement, which coexist with elements of the most recent cultural and economic history of the island.
