Agriculture and women in Lanzarote

RURAL WOMEN IN LANZAROTE

Appearances often deceive us and there are corners of the island where agriculture is still important.

Crops of potatoes, vines or tomatoes are hidden among paths that surround the volcanoes in one of the most rural areas of Lanzarote, far from the masses and with great heritage wealth.

In the municipality of Teguise, between the towns of Tiagua and Muñique, surrounded by jable (sand) and rofe (ash), one of the emblematic craters of the area rises: Montaña Timbaiba.

A route of just over 2 km, of easy level that takes us to discover the agricultural essence of the island and the role of the peasant women of these towns.

WOMEN AND AGRICULTURE IN LANZAROTE

A route that starts from the church in Tiagua to make a first stop at its mill. Here we begin to discover the importance of agriculture for the area and to better understand the role of the peasant women of Lanzarote.

We continue along the path that takes us directly to the crater of Montaña Timbaiba; during the walk we will come across fields of crops that the local people continue to take care of day after day. With a bit of luck we might spot a crow or kestrel as we approach the crater.

The interior of Montaña Timbaiba, which we will enjoy from a safe distance to preserve the fragility of the environment, reveals the origins of the volcano, its formation and its importance from a paleontological point of view. It is also time to discover the traditional farming methods of Lanzarote and talk in more detail about the role of rural women.

After the route, if you wish, we can make a stop at one of the local establishments to taste a glass of Lanzarote wine.

You choose which association to allocate €1 for each participant in your reservation. The proceeds will go to the eco-bank of your choice.

Keep on enjoying Lanzarote
