Teguise: a hiking route between history and nature

Experience between history and nature: the Vega of San José

One of the little-known areas of Lanzarote, not far from the old capital. A corner full of history and with an important ethnographic heritage.

From the outskirts of Teguise we start walking along part of the historic path that linked Orzola with Playa Blanca. Depending on the season in which you do the experience, the vegetation changes in a surprising way, a sign of the fertility of these lands, which are covered with a green mantle after a few days of rain.

The first stop will be where the old Cortijo de San José and the hermitage of the same name were located. Here we discover the history of the modern era of Lanzarote, its religious traditions, but also the rural reality of the island of volcanoes.

We continue crossing the valley and we will have the opportunity to talk about the different systems of growing crops used by the farmers of Lanzarote.

Flora and geology come together to fill this corner with a special magic. Natural species that grow on land that is formed by the accumulation of sedimentary material from the erosion of the Famara Massif.

In the second part of the walk, a spectacular surprise awaits us before arriving at LTeguise and discovering the lime kilns and another of the hermitages of the ancient capital of Lanzarote.

Once in Teguise, we will take the opportunity to taste its typical cuisine or to visit the art gallery or the small artisan shops.

HIKING ROUTE TO DISCOVER THE HISTORY OF LANZAROTE

A medium-low level route 6km long.

From our meeting point, we gradually leave the town of Teguise to walk part of the old path that linked Playa Blanca with Orzola.

A path with hardly any unevenness that will make us enjoy a unique environment, a landscape transformed by Man and where nature also plays an important role.

Halfway through the route we find a slight slope with a gradient of approximately 100m. The effort is worth it since in the end we will enjoy wonderful views of the northwest coast of Lanzarote, with Famara beach in front of our eyes.

In addition, you also choose which association to allocate €1 for each participant in your reservation. The proceeds will go to the eco-bank of your choice.

Keep on enjoying Lanzarote
